Google likely to enter set-top box industry with Green Throttle Games acquisition

Google has reportedly acquired assets and some of the key talent of a recently defunct gaming company, hinting towards an upcoming move by search giant into the set-top box industry. The news has reportedly renewed discussions that the web giant is working on a set-top box to rival Apple TV as well as a possible offering from Amazon. According to Mashable, the Android-based gaming company Green Throttle Games, who had made a Bluetooth gaming controller that could be paired with an Android phone or tablet, as well as hardware that connected the device to a TV, was founded by Charles Huang, Matt Crowley and Karl Townsend. Despite Crowley and Townsend’s decision to join Google, as indicated by their LinkedIn profile, Huang will reportedly keep the rights of Green Throttle and will not be joining the web giant, the report added. Although Google has previously made unsuccessful attempts to put itself into competition with other streaming or ‘over the top’ devices, with its Nexus Q billed as a ‘cloud connect jukebox’ failing to take off, the company has found little success with its ‘Chromecast’.
