Goods worth crores destroyed in Chandni Chowk fire

New Delhi: A fire broke out in the wee hours today in Moti Bazar area of Chandni Chowk, destroying many shops and goods worth crores.

Since the fire broke out in the wee hours, there were no casualties in the incident. The market usually sees high footfall during daytime.

“A call was received today at 3.55 AM about a fire breaking out in the Moti Bazar area that houses many shops,” said an officer from Delhi Fire Services.

He said that 27 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control by 8.50 AM.

Around 25 shops were affected by the blaze.

Police is probing as to what could have trigerred the fire. It is suspected that the blaze could have been triggered by a short-circuit.

Some security guards had noticed flames emanating from a shop. The fire spread to other shops quickly.

Since the market was empty at the time and there was no traffic, fire tenders reached the spot in no time.

The situation was brought under control, but by then goods like confectionery, saris and other items were destroyed.

This was the third incident of fire in the last two days.

Yesterday, a fire in the kitchen of a restaurant in Rohini killed a waiter.

Also last evening, a fire broke out in the server room in Parliament House but was doused within a span of 15 minutes.
