Good Friday: Christians across the globe commemorate crucifixion of Jesus Christ

New Delhi: The international Christian community today commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with prayers, masses and processions being carried out by devotees.

Good Friday calls on Christians to reflect on their sins and prepare themselves for Easter, which is when Jesus rose from the dead three days after he was crucified.

The Catholic Church treats Good Friday as a day of fasting as devotees spend the day in penance and prayers.

Mass is celebrated with Jesus’ journey from his arrest to his torture to his crucifixion, being read out during the ceremony.

Christians on this day chose to be subdued and in a solemn and spiritual frame of mind, especially after 3 pm which was when Jesus breathed his last.

Some countries, such as Germany, have laws prohibiting certain acts, such as dancing and horse racing that are seen as profaning the solemn nature of the day.

Pope Francis will preside over the Good Friday commemoration at the Vatican today. (ANI)
