Golconda’s Pink diamond auctioned for $16m in London

The Historic Pink Diamond supposed to have been mined from Golconda in Hyderabad weighing 8.72 carats was auctioned for $15.9 million in London.

It was auctioned at Spring Magnificent Jewels and Nobel Jewels in London. Mr. David Bennett, head of Sotheby’s International Jewellery Division told that this diamond may have been found in Golconda Mines in Hyderabad. It is believed that this was the part of the collection of Princes Mathilde, the niece of Emperor Napoleon-I. This Diamond was kept in a bank vault since 1940.

Mr. Mohammed Safiullah, a heritage enthusiast told that Pink Diamond of this size is rarely found. Very few diamonds have pink colour.

From 15th to 19th Century explorations of Diamonds from Golconda Mines was carried out. Experts are of the opinion that present Government of the Telangana may explore the possibility of mining diamonds in Krishna Valley.
