Jalandhar, March 08: Even as the Women’s Reservation Bill was yet to see the light of the day, the Punjab Mahila Congress today raised its voice against any move to field spouses or relatives of MPs and MLAs from seats likely to be reserved for the fair sex.
Any attempt by male leaders to get tickets for women in their families for contesting polls would be stoutly resisted, said Ratna and Harsimart Kaur, president and vice-president respectively of the state Mahila Congress.
Tickets should be given to deserving women who were devoted to the party, they said after attending a function related to the Women’s Day.
“They (male leaders) managed to do this during Municipal Corporation and Municipal Committee elections, but we shall not allow this to happen during assembly or parliamentary polls,” they said.
