Give donations through special ATMs

Dubai, June 15: Philanthropists can now pay through the Dubai-based Beit Al Khair Society’s (BAKS) ATM machines in big shopping malls in the country.

Abdeen Taher, Director-General–BAKS, said the teller machine is a multi-services electric safe which gives donors and generous contributors a variety of options. “There is no need for an agent to collect charity anymore.”

Taher said the nine options available make it easier for donors to decide on the charity programmes and projects they deem right.

“They can easily pay for any of the eight types of Zakat (prescribed alms), as well as optional general charity, including orphans, people with special needs, foodstuff, and so forth.”

Taher then indicated that the move coincides with the new Ramadan campaign to be launched after two months.

“The drive, themed ‘Spend (in charity) of what We have bestowed on you’ is aimed to encourage philanthropists and benevolent people to give for charity for the benefit of the poor and needy.”

Abdullah Al Ustaz, Head of Finance department of the society, said, “The charity ATM machine will be installed at popular shopping centres and department stores which attract large numbers of people across the emirates, such as the Mall of the Emirates, as well as city centres in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.” “Beit Al Khair Society may be reached at: Phone: (04-2277272), Fax: (04-2277922) or balkhair@emirates.net.ae,” he added.

Islamic scholar Dr Sheikh Mohamed Ashmawy said the initiative would make charity giving possible for anyone anytime at fixed areas. “There is no need to look for someone to give zakat; it is easier to choose the one you wish by just one click.”

Islam Al Shiwy, an Egyptian resident, said the new machine would encourage many people, be they men or women, to pay zakat without interacting with an agent. “I know some people who do not want any one to know about their charity, even if an agent.”
