Hyderabad: Center for Women’s Studies of Maulana Azad National Urdu University organized an awareness program on “Girls’ Rights” at MANUU Model School, Jahanuma on 24th January to mark “National Girl Child Day”.
It may be noted that Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, Govt. of India had started this program in 2008. Its objective was to eradicate discrimination against girls and also to create awareness among the people.
Prof. Ashraf Rafi, former Head of the Department of Urdu, OU was the Chief Guest of the function. In her address she told that education develops the personality of girls and creates confidence in them. It makes her a responsible member of the society. If girls are given opportunities, they can excel in any field of life. It is being observed that the percentage of success among the girls is on the increase in most of the competitive examinations.
Dr. Ameena Tehsin, Director, Center for Women’s Studies highlighted the aims and objectives of the program. She told that although the number of girls in Urdu medium schools is more than the number of boys but it is also a fact that the infanticide cases are on the increase. The girls are being killed in the fetus of the mother before they are born.
