Girl stoned to death by family

Hyderabad, April 07: In a suspected case of ‘honour killing’, a young girl was forcibly taken away from her husband’s house by her relatives and was later stoned to death and set ablaze in a village near Shadnagar of Mahabubnagar district on Thursday.

The 18-year-old girl, Madhavi, had married a boy of another caste against the wishes of her family which allegedly prompted them to kill her, police said. The incident took place in Kakanoor village under the Keshampet police limits.

According to police, Madhavi, who completed her intermediate, fell in love with a boy Lingamaiah, of the same village and married him in November 2010. “When she married Lingamaiah, she was a minor and her family members lodged a kidnap case against the boy,” Keshampet sub-inspector of police Sai Chandra Prasad said.

However, the girl attained 18 years of age in 2011 and the couple started living together in the same village since February. Madhavi’s family members bore a grudge against her since then.

On Thursday morning around 6.30 a.m., more than four members of Madhavi’s family came to Lingamaiah’s house and forcibly took her away. “Lingamaiah was away to attend the call of nature. Other family members made a vain attempt to prevent them but they took her to their house and confined her,” the SI said.

Lingamaiah’s family immediately approached the police who registered cases under illegal confinement and kidnap and started investigation. But by then, Madhavi’s family members shifted her.

Late in the evening, Madhavi’s dead body was found in the hillocks on the outskirts of the village. “She was stoned to death and later set ablaze,” the SI said. Police registered cases under kidnap and murder and are investigating.

Four of the accused have been identified and a search is on to nab them. Meanwhile, a police picket has been put in the village to prevent any trouble.
