Girl dies after hospital refuses to admit her

Sydney, July 24: A FOUR-year-old girl died after she was denied access to a northwest Queensland hospital, her grandfather says.

ABC’s The World Today program reported the girl, from Doomadgee, had been ill for several days.

Her grandfather, Athol Walden, said she was denied access to the local hospital because of swine flu concerns.

Mr Walden said the family had asked for the child to be taken to Mount Isa Hospital, but she died before this could occur.

“She was four years old … she loved to go to school, she loved fishing and she enjoyed herself in the bush,” Mr Walden said.

“I’m so disappointed in how they treated her at this hospital – it’s a disaster.”

Comment is being sought from Queensland Health.
