Girl commits suicide in Haibowal

Ludhiana, July 09: A 24-year old girl shot herself on Wednesday afternoon at her residence in Durga Puri, Haibowal. Shikha Lal committed suicide by shooting herself in the head with a revolver when her entire family was present in the house.

“The incident occured in the afternoon. According to the deceased’s family, Shikha stole the keys of the almirah where her father’s revolver was kept. She took out the revolver and shot herself in the head. At the time of the incident, the entire family of the deceased including her mother, father, brother, sister-in-law and others were present at home,” DSP Varinder Brar said, even as the police suspect the deceased’s family of concealing the exact cause behind Shikha’s suicide.

The police have constituted a board of doctors who would conduct the post-mortem on Shikha’s body tommorrow morning after which her body will be handed over to her family. Ruling out any probability of murder, Brar said, “ It is quite clear from the scene of crime the girl shot herself.

But our main concern is that the family is not telling us as to why the girl took such an extreme step. They have given us very petty reasons like Shikha possessed a bad temper and remained angry in the past few days. But the family is not telling us the reason for her anger. It seems that the family is hiding something from us.”

“The presence of a bullet in Shikha’s head does not indicate murder for at times even in cases of suicide the bullet may not come out from other side. The only thing is with the family not coming out clear on Shikha’s death due to which they are leaving a scope for doubt which is not good for them. We could not question the family today since they were extremely upset.

But after the cremation, we will question all the people present in the house when this incident occurred as well as the neighbours seeking answers to all the questions leading to Shikha’s death,” Brar added.

Shikha was unmarried and was living with her parents. Her father Mohan Lal runs a gift shop at Gur Mandi.
