Girl beaten to death a day after authorities visited family to probe abuse allegations

Florida, March 08: A Florida girl was beaten to death just one day after a state child protective services investigator visited her family’s house to look into abuse allegations.

Nubia Barahona, 10, was found dead and wrapped in plastic in the back of her adoptive father’s pest control truck Friday, February 11, the Miami Herald said.

But one day earlier, an investigator had visited the family to probe an anonymous tip that Barahona and her twin brother Victor were tied up in the bathroom, the report said, citing police documents.

The investigator was satisfied, however, by mother Carmen Barahona’s false explanation that their father had moved out of the house with the twins.

Victor told investigators that less than 24 hours after the investigator’s visit he could hear Jorge Barahona beating his sister to death.

Both twins were found in the family’s pickup truck. Nubia was dead, and Victor was doused in a chemical and badly burned but alive.

The parents have been arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated child abuse and seven counts of child neglect.

The Barahonas’ two other adoptive children are currently in protective custody.
