Hyderabad, March 29: Union Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation M.S. Gill has promised that the Centre will do everything required to promote research and development in statistics, mathematics and computer sciences.
He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the Mathematical Sciences block in ‘Ramanujan’, the new building of the C.R. Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences (AIMSCS), at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), here on Monday.

Pointing out to the key role played by statistics in planning, Mr. Gill said it was indicative of the importance attached to the subject, adding that Indians in general and those specialising in the subject were greatly respected across the world. Earlier, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy inaugurated the Biological and Environmental Sciences block in the same building.
He said research and development needed to be promoted in a big way. Only education could change life in every way. He said the State government had spent Rs. 3,500 crore towards fee reimbursement and added that the amount would be increased to Rs. 5,000 crore in the next fiscal.
Eminent statistician C.R. Rao, who was instrumental in setting up the institute, acknowledged the praise showered on him by speakers and narrated the beginnings of AIMSCS.
Minister of Secondary Education K. Parthasaradhi and UoH Vice-Chancellor Syed E. Hasnain were among those present.
