Gilani sacks FIA chief

Islamabad, April 08: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Wednesday sacked the Director General of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Wasim Siddiqui.

The Supreme Court had earlier ordered the government to remove Siddiqui.

In its order on March 1, the top court had ordered the government to remove Siddiqui from the FIA for his inefficiency in preparing an accurate report about Haj scam.

The chief justice in his order observed: “The FIA failed to submit an accurate account of the massive corruption during Haj arrangements. It further failed to apportion clear responsibility.”

It may be noted that Gilani’s son Qadir has also been named in the corruption case.

The FIA has allegedly failed to carry out proper investigations against Qadir in the case.

Siddiqui is a contractual employee of the FIA and considered to be close to President Asif Ali Zardari.

During court proceedings Tuesday, Justice Raja Fayyaz said that the Haj scam could not be justly investigated under the supervision of the current head of the FIA.

The top court also dismissed the FIA’s report on the Haj corruption case saying that investigative agency was trying to protect suspects.

Meanwhile, Gilani Wednesday appointed Malik Muhammad Iqbal, presently serving as the Inspector General of Baluchistan Police, as the new director general of the FIA.
