Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Shamsher Singh Manhas and PDP’s Fayaz Mir and Nazir Ahmad Laway today emerged victorious in the elections to four Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir.
The National Conference had announced its support to Azad, the Congress’ Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, who was seeking re-election.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who was among the first to cast his vote, earlier in the day said he was confident of Azad’s victory.
“I believe that the secular forces of the state and the independent MLAs and individuals bearing secular thoughts will definitely listen to their internal voice, will vote for Ghulam Nabi Azad and make him win,” he told the media.
Seven candidates, two each from the BJP, PDP and National Conference and one from the Congress were in the fray.
The PDP and BJP fought the elections jointly, each fielding two candidates for the four seats.
The PDP, with 28 seats, is the single-largest party in the state assembly, while the BJP has 25 seats in the 87-member house. (ANI)
