The ordinary meeting of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, to be held on Saturday after a gap of nearly nine months, is likely to be stormy.
The ordinary meeting will be held with major changes in almost all political parties. This is the first meeting after Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen severed its ties with the Congress party. The strained relationship will have a major impact on the functioning of the council meeting. MIM’s GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain who got elected with the Congress party’s support would now be treat as an Opposition’s Mayor by the ruling party. On the other side, Mayor and his party corporators would consider Congress as the opposition. Both are likely to target each other for the failures during the last 10 months since the GHMC council meeting was held.
Meanwhile, the main opposition Telugu Desam Party will try to take advantage of the political situation by blaming both the Congress and MIM for the prevailing situation. In other terms, three major parties will try to play the role of opposition against each other during Saturday’s meeting.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party will have a reason to celebrate on Saturday. Following High Court’s judgment, its member C Uday Kumar will take oath as the corporator of Langar Houz division. While this will increase BJP’s strength in the council from five to six, the MIM’s tally will come down from 43 to 42 corporators.
The Congress party too will witness many changes. Its former floor leader Kaleru Venkatesh will be sitting along with YSR Congress party corporators and his place will be taken over by Barkatpura corporator D Rambabu. The TDP’s strength too has reduced from 44 to 43 after one of its corporator joined the YSRCP. Therefore, the YSR Congress party will emerge as a new entity in the corporation although it did not get any official recognition.
Meanwhile, the political parties on Friday held meetings to discuss the strategy to be adopted during the GHMC’s ordinary meeting. The TDP is all set to raise issues like improper sanitation, outbreak of dengue, fever, property tax, shifting of Birth and Certificates issuance to Mee Seva and storm water drain. The BJP too is planning to highlight the corporation’s failure.
However, the strategy to be adopted by the Congress and MIM is not yet clear as both appears to be in confusion on whether to play the role of a ruling party or opposition.
