GHMC Mayor inspects Charminar pedestrianisation project

GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain on Saturday inspected the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project.

The Mayor was accompanied with Charminar MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri, former Mayor Mir Zulfeqar Ali, GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar and other senior officials. The team visited all the areas of CPP Project and expressed dissatisfaction on the progress of the project.

Majid Hussain said that a review meeting would be held on Monday involving the Charminar MLA, area corporators and senior officials to prepare an action plan for taking up demolitions and remove encroachments on the CPP Project site. He said many affected people have constructed the buildings despite taking the compensation cheques. He directed the officials concerned to take up the demolitions duly following legal procedures.

The Charminar MLA said that the project has been pending since 1986 due to various reasons. He informed that nearly 15 to 20 properties were still pending for acquisition. To resolve the issue, he said a private lawyer should be engaged to sort out the issue in a phased manner.

While on inspection at Charminar surrounding areas on seeing the old dilapidated structures, encroachments on Charminar Pedestrian Project, the Commissioner directed the Town Planning and Engineering officials to take up the demolitions and removal of encroachments immediately.

The Commissioner said that he had been to Turkey and other countries where pedestrianisation has been taken up at historical places and observed that the business has been increased tremendously at the tourists spots keeping in view of the above facts he assured all the shop keepers and residents not to fear about their business and their cooperation is very badly needed for completion of the CPP Project at the earliest. Once the project is completed the flow of tourists will increase and automatically their business will improve.

Engineer-in-Chief R Dhan Singh, Zonal Commissioner (South) Balasubrahmanyam Reddy, Chief City Planner Devender Reddy and senior officials from Town Planning, Engineering and Health wings have participated in the inspection. (INN)
