GHMC launches drive against plastic bag users; many merchants fined

The GHMC officials today launched a drive against usage of plastic bags in the city. The officials raided kirana, chicken, mutton and other shops, which were using plastic bags below 50 microns thick. They also conducted raids in the factories at various places which were producing plastic bags below 50 micron thick.

The GHMC additional commissioner Ravi Kiran led a team and raided factories at Katedan and Babulreddynagar. During the raid, it was found that the owners of the factories were manufacturing plastic bags violating the prescribed norms. They seized materials used in manufacturing plastic bags below 50 microns thickness. The officials imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 to a factory and cancelled its license as factory owner was operating illegally without obtaining license.

GHMC medical officer Dr Mallikarjuna raided shops in Lingojinagar, Saroornagar and L B Nagar circles while Secunderabad medical officer Venkatramana led a team and raided shops on the Secunderabad Railway Station road. The officials imposed fines against those violating the norms and seized material used in manufacturing plastic bags below 50 microns thickness
