GHMC launches awareness campaign on Swine Flu

Hyderabad, June 28: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, as part of its efforts to check the spread of the dreaded Swine Flu disease, has started an awareness campaign to educate people on precautions to check the spread of Swine Flu.

Talking to INN, GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation) S Aleem Basha on Sunday said that the Corporation is being helped by the state government in this effort.

Mr Basha said that the GHMC is erecting hoardings, pasting posters and distributing leaflets in different languages among the general public.

Mr Basha said that an estimated Rs 18 to 20 lakh would be spent this year on the awareness campaign, whereas Rs 17 lakh had been spent for the same purpose.

The GHMC official said that the Corporation lacks the adequate resources to combat the spread of the dreaded disease on its own, but it is being helped by the government into keeping the H1N1 virus’s spread under control.

Mr Basha said that the primary responsibility of the GHMC was to create awareness among the people about the disease and the Corporation was doing this job efficiently.

Apart from concentrating on the swine flu virus, the GHMC is making all efforts to keep diseases like Malaria and Dengue and other water-borne diseases from spreading.

He said that with the onset of monsoons, the breeding grounds for mosquitoes also increase, thereby increasing the chances of such diseases.

To control this spread of disease, the GHMC Health Department has taken all preventive measures. He said that a hundred GHMC employees have been deployed to keep the River Musi clean and prevents breeding grounds for mosquitoes from forming.

Apart from these measures, all water bodies like lakes, ponds, pools, open wells are being disinfected to check the breeding of mosquitoes.

The Emergency Squad of the GHMC Health Department is on alert round the clock, said Mr Basha.
