GHMC keen to make city beggar-free: Bonthu

City Mayor Bonthu Rammohan  today said the GHMC, in cooperation with other departments, was taking measures to make Hyderabad  beggar-free city.

Flagging off a van donated by an NGO at GHMC office here on Monday, the Mayor said steps have been taken in this regard with the cooperation of the city police, NGOs and other State government departments. He also sought public cooperation to make the city beggar-free. As part of this step, a survey has been conducted recently and identified 500 people as beggars. These people would be sent to rehabilitation centers in a phased manner and some of them on the basis of their skills would be provided self-employment, he added.

The van was launched with a slogan to public not to give money to beggars at crossroads or any other places. So far, 250 beggars have been sent to an orphanage in Choutuppal, the Mayor said, adding that the survey revealed that only two per cent people are genuine beggars as begging also became a mafia in the city.
