GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar has announced that a special engineering wing would be established for Urban Biodiversity in view of the ensuing Metropolis World Congress.
On the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday, the GHMC Commissioner held a review meeting with the Urban Biodiversity (Parks) wing of GHMC in Panwar Hall in GHMC Head Office today.
Speaking on the occasion, Somesh Kumar said the Engineering wing will be headed by an Executive Engineer and supported by two Deputy Executive Engineers and four Assistant Executive Engineers. He directed the Urban Biodiversity officials to distribute 2,000 saplings to each of 150 Corporators besides two lakh saplings to educational institutions and one lakh to malls. The GHMC target for the coming monsoon season is 10 lakh saplings. He also directed to plant date palm trees in heritage corridors.
The GHMC chief asked the officials to make special arrangements for Metropolis saying that the Corporation would not mind to spend more than Rs 50 crores. He directed the officials to concentrate on developing 500 Colony Parks/Tree parks during the current financial year and also to take up planting of trees which will grow faster, gives shade and need less maintenance in colony parks. He also directed the officials to coordinate with Railway authorities in order to take up plantation works near Railway Stations under GHMC limits.
The Commissioner disclosed that an amount of Rs 50 lakhs has been allotted to each Zonal Commissioner to take up the works relating to Urban Biodiversity wing exclusively. He said plantation program on massive scale should be taken up during the current monsoon in the areas like Jawahar Nagar dumping yard and other suitable places by involving the public representatives and students. During the current monsoon, the GHMC would procure 20,000 iron tree guards for safeguarding the avenue plants, he added.
Somesh Kumar also instructed the officials to take up planting of wall creepers on the road side existing walls to improve aesthetic look of the corridor. He said the GHMC has 20 nurseries under its jurisdiction and was planning to establish seven more nurseries during the current year.
The Commissioner said the GHMC would develop the major projects like Rock Garden at Jubilee Hills, Mir Alam Tank, Kishan Bagh Park, Malkam Cheruvu, Khajaguda lake, Golconda Fort Heritage corridor, Thamidikunta lake near Hitec City, Brailey Park at Nalgonda crossroads, Mullakathva lake, Kendriya Vihar Lake, Kothaguda lake and develop theme parks such as Bamboo garden, Herbal Garden, Bogan Villa Garden, Butterfly Park, Beautification of Musi River bunds near High Court and beautification of NTR Marg along Hussain Sagar lake side.
