GHMC decides to repair city roads

(Siasat News)Standing Committee of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation considered the issue of road repairs in the city very seriously.

Most of the members of the Standing Committee were of the opinion that many roads in the city have been damaged due to the recent rainfall. In case, these roads are not repaired on time, it would be difficult for the corporators to maintain their credibility. Repair work should be taken up within 10 to 15 days. It is the main responsibility of the Zonal Commissioners of Municipal Corporation to repair the roads. They were delegated the powers to sanction up to Rs.5 lakh but they failed to take any action against the engineers who did not take up the repair works of the roads.

Mayor, Mr. Majid Hussain instructed the Zonal Commissioners to issue notices to such engineers who didn’t perform their duties.

Briefing the newsmen after the meeting of the standing committee, the Mayor told that 300 roads were identified for repairs and a sum of Rs.4 crore was allocated for this purpose as per the estimate but the GHMC had allocated Rs.22 crore for this work in this year’s budget. The members of the Standing Committee presented the details of the repair works to be taken up. The Mayor instructed the Zonal Commissioners to delete the names of the contractors who fail to complete the repair works within the stipulated period. He also instructed them to call for short tender notices and start the works immediately. The Standing Committee rejected the proposals of cleaning the aquatic plants and eliminating the mosquitoes from R.K. Puram and Shah Hathim Tanks. These estimates were of Rs.38 lakh and Rs.37 lakh respectively because the results of these works after spending huge amounts won’t be satisfactory. It was felt that a comprehensive scheme should prepared for cleaning these tanks.

The issue of giving compensation to the owners of the lands whose properties have been acquired in connection with road widening programmes was discussed. Since the value of lands in MIDHANI area has gone up, it was decided to enhance land compensation from Rs.7, 000 to Rs. 12, 000 per sq.yard.

The rates of the lands acquired for road widening in Zohra Bee Dargah have also been revised in the same way.

It was decided to pay the compensation to 49 owners of properties in Koka ki tatti and Petla Bruj areas as per the rates fixed by the Sub-Registrar of Charminar. Standing Committee approved the proposal of road widening in Kandikal Gate area also.

The members of Standing Committee accepted the proposal of the commissioner of GHMC to make use of the latest technology for cleaning the roads instead of getting the six garbage vehicles repaired which are used for carrying garbage.

Standing Committee approved the proposal of providing skywalk at Rathi Bus Terminal and Secunderabad Bus Stations. This proposal costs Rs.7.70 crore. The Mayor pointed out that most of the roads in the city come under the jurisdiction of either the Department of Roads and Buildings or National Highways Authority but the responsibility of their maintenance has been entrusted to GHMC. He told that a proposal has been sent to the Govt. for giving all the city roads under the control of a single department so that their timely maintenance could be taken care of. He admitted that due to the present arrangement, delay is being caused in their repair works on time.
