GHMC aims to double Property Tax collection

Hyderabad, August 17: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to double the Property Tax collection by the end of current fiscal.

This was announced by the GHMC Commissioner MT Krishna Babu and Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy at a joint press conference here on Tuesday. According to the Commissioner, the GHMC would focus more on increasing its revenue in the current financial year. Presently, the Property Tax is being collected from 10.5 lakh houses. However, within a period of six to seven months, the GHMC would collect tax from all 21 lakh houses in its jurisdiction. The GHMC is also hopeful of getting vehicle tax and profession tax collection from the government.

Briefing the media about the major decisions taken during the GHMC’s Standing Committee meet held here on Tuesday, the Commissioner said that it has been decided to take 600 crores loan from SBH, a separate account to be maintained for City Level Infrastructure Development projects and all payments of that project from the above escrow account. The banks will be paying directly to the contractors after completion of the work. The rate of interest will be 11.25% and all the works has to be completed within 24 months.

Following a government order, the GHMC has also decided to identify 60 more community halls to be used as night shelters. Presently, night shelters are provided in just four community halls.

Mr. Krishna Babu has appealed to the public not to purchase un-authorized buildings. He said encroachment in cellar would be removed in a phased manner and it would be a continuous process. Footpath encroachment drive will be continued in 1st week of every month, he added.
