A gesture of harmony: Elderly Sikh wakes up Muslims for ‘Sehri’, video goes viral

SRINAGAR: A short video clip of elderly Sikh man carrying out the ancient tradition of waking up Muslims neighbours for suhoor or pre-dawn Ramzan meal has been shared widely on social media platforms.

The 21-second video clip showed the Sikh man takes on the role of dawn awakeners known as ‘Mesaharati’, or a public waker and walks down alleyways in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Before starting to beat his drum, the elderly Sikh with a melodious voice chants, “Allah Rasool de pyaaro, jannat de talabgaro, utho roza rakho (The beloved of Allah and his messenger, the seekers of paradise, wake up to start your fast).”

The Sikh man gesture garnered much praise on social media, saying he embodied the communal harmony that has existed in Kashmir for centuries.
