GES 2017: Cherie Blair, Ivanka call for bridging gender gap to improve the economies of nations

Cherie Blair, UK’s former first lady, a lawyer and founder of Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, Ivanka Trump, adviser to the American President and owner of a clothing company, Chanda Kochhar of ICICI and Karen Quintos CCO of Dell EMC participated the opening session of the second day of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2017 in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

As reported by TOI, Telangana’s IT minister K Taraka Rama Rao (KTR) who was moderating the discussion, was caught on the backfoot on several occasions when the erudite Cherie Blair threw googlies at him.

The theme of the session was ‘We Can Do It! Innovations in Workforce Development and Skills Training’. Women participants highlighted the issues plaguing women in the sphere of entrepreneurship and the workforce globally.

Blair cited various global studies that indicate that working women tend to plough 90% of their earnings back into their families and communities whereas men only contribute a meagre 30-40%.

Ivanka Trump lamented upon the “unconscious bias” prevalent in society towards girls and women.

ICICI Bank’s managing director and CEO Chanda Kochhar prescribed the three ‘E’s – Education, Empowerment and Encouragement — to boost the prospects of aspiring women. She also pointed out the role conflict a working woman faces when she starts a family.

Both Ivanka Trump and Cherie Blair stressed the need to bridge the gender gap to improve the economies of nations.
