German May Day clashes injure 10

Bangkok, May 01: In Germany, clashes between 4,000 far-left demonstrators and the police have left 10 officers injured on the eve of May Day celebrations.

On Saturday, demonstrators in the German northern city of Hamburg threw stones and paint bombs at police officers and set one car and several waste containers on fire, AFP reported.

Police used water cannons to disperse the crowds, the report added.

Last year, five policemen and a firefighter were injured in clashes in the German city of Hamburg.

Around 2,500 officers were deployed in the city to keep the situation under control.

In the capital Berlin, some 3,000 police officers were deployed late Saturday and there would be twice as many the following night, a police spokesman said.

In 2009, after several relatively peaceful years, clashes returned to the German capital once again.

May 1 — international workers’ day — has been marked by street violence between far-right skinheads, anti-fascist groups and police in Germany over the past two decades.
