German Chancellor Merkel to address Congress

Berlin, October 05: German Chancellor Angela Merkel will address the U.S. Congress in early November, ahead of ceremonies in Berlin marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Merkel’s spokesman Thomas Steg said Monday the chancellor has accepted the invitation of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to address the House and the Senate. She is only the second German government leader to address Congress; Chancellor Konrad Adenauer spoke in 1957.

Steg says the address will take place on Nov. 3 and Merkel is expected to recall the events of 1989 that lead to the collapse of communism and Germany’s reunification.

Merkel will also meet with President Barack Obama.
