Geeta Phogat backs Zaira Wasim over harassment matter

New Delhi : Wrestler Geeta Phogat has condemned the alleged Zaira Wasim harassment incident and has said the 17-year-old actress should have slapped the man the very moment he tried to touch her.

Zaira, who had played the young Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan’s blockbuster film Dangal, had last night taken to Instagram to post a story wherein she alleged a middle-aged man tried to molest her when she was en route Mumbai from Delhi by an Air Vistara flight.

Phogat while extending her support to the national award-winning actress, told ANI, “Whatever has happened is very wrong. If it can happen with Zaira, then it can happen with anyone. Zaira should have slapped the man at that very moment”

The Commonwealth gold medallist added the incident should not be left limited to an Instagram story.

She further opined, “Girls themselves should show courage to take a step forward when these kinds of incidents happen. When girls say they are no less than anyone, they should also prove that and show some confidence.”

In the Instagram video, Zaira could be seen fighting her tears and saying, “This is not done; I am disturbed. Is this how you’re going to take care of girls?”

She said she had called out to the cabin crew for help but it was of no use.

The National Commision of Women (NCW), the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW), the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have sought details from Air Vistara over the incident.

Taking note of the incident, the airline have ordered a detailed investigation into the incident.

In a statement, the airline also apologised, adding Zaira started yelling at the accused passenger only during the descent of the flight, due to which the cabin crew couldn’t move because it’s mandatory to have no movement during the final phase of the flight as seat belts are on. (ANI)
