Geelani catches police off-guard

Srinagar, March 25: Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was placed under house arrest yesterday, today gave police personnel deployed at his residence a slip.

Geelani moved out of his house unnoticed with a team of the Amnesty International which called on him in the afternoon.

Caught off-guard, police soon chased his vehicle with photo and video journalists in tow.

The hunt ended with the hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman entering the house of his aide Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, who is detained under the Public Safety Act, in Baghat Barzulla area.

The Amnesty members sought to know the reason from police for tailing Geelani but no explanation was given.

Police also directed journalists to leave the place.

Senior police officials refused to comment on the incident.

The Hurriyat hawk was placed under house arrest soon after his return from Delhi yesterday.
