GEB engineers protest against management decision over public holidays

Ahmeddabad, July 08: After the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) allegedly failed to satisfy the charter of demands made by the GEB Engineers Association, more than 4,800 engineers across Gujarat wore black ribbons to protest against the GEB management.

According to the association, the management failed to maintain the service condition of the employees they had demanded.

This comes after the management cancelled the number of public holidays for GEB employees. On Tuesday, more than 60 engineers outsourced to Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) by GEB also joined in the protest by wearing black ribbons.

Engineers from SSNNL refused to comment on the issue. But Virbhadrasinh Rana from the GEB Engineers Association said: “The engineers are hurt by the management’s decision. The charter of demand made under the Sixth Pay Commission is not being taken up even now, one of them being public holidays. There were 24 public holidays which have been reduced to eight by the management.”

He added: “We were getting these public holidays for the last 30-odd years. This is despite the fact that the GEB management had a tripartite agreement with the Government of India (GoI) and the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) about the service conditions of employees which also include public holiday. We have already written to the Labour Commission and our management regarding our demands; we have given them 22 days.”
