Hyderabad, October 31: GE volunteers has been working for societal benefit since a long time. Working for infrastructure reconstruction for the flood-affected, GE Volunteers has also provided various basic amenities like blankets and other requirements. “All the GE employees are by default a part of GE Volunteers and we try and make sure that we actually work with people and don’t just give money,” said Sanjeev Jain, India leader of GE Volunteers. Working in four major areas: education, healthcare, environment and disaster management, the organisation has been active in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. The organisation also has long term plans to help the flood victims.
“We plan to partner with the Andhra Pradesh government and provide pro-active things like trigger mechanism to avoid such disasters from occurring. And in case they do occur, we would want to come up with command centres that work for disaster management,” Jain added.
Along with flood relief, the organisation has been working in various areas like organising blood donation camps, and providing preventive checkups and medicines.
GE has also come up with a new ECG machine, which is small and portable to villages.
“Mac 500 (ECG machine) is small and can be carried to villages and so, when initially people used to pay Rs 200 to Rs 300, but now the same thing can be done by spending just Rs 50,” Jain informed adding that they would provide this machine to poorer hospitals for free but they are also open to selling them, if some bigger hospital wants it.
The machine would cost Rs 40,000, Jain said.
Apart from infrastructure and healthcare, GE also works with differently-abled people and tries and increases employment amongst them. “If I have two candidate with similar qualifications, I’d prefer hiring a differently-abled person because it raises awareness among other employees as well and also because the loyalty factor among differently-abled is more,” Jain added.
“We would make sure that we put in customised effort and give in lot of time and effort in whatever work we do. We want to keep in touch with all the organisations we work with.” GE is organising an Asia Volunteers award, every November 13. They get all the volunteers of Asia to come under one platform and share their works, so that others can do the same. “This is an annual event through which we try and bring people from all across Asia under one platform and recognise their work and effort,” Jain informed.
