Gauri Lankesh assassination: Journalists hold massive protests throughout the country

New Dehli: On Tuesday, noted Journalist Gauri Lankesh was brutally murdered in Bengaluru by an unknown assailant. The assailant fired 5 bullets, out of which two missed, two hit on her chest and one on her forehead. She was the Editor of “Gauri Lankesh Patrike”.

Massive protests are being held in Delhi, Karnataka, Hyderabad and other cities of the country. American Mission in India also joined the protest. American Embassy issued a statement condoning the death of Gauri Lankesh and expressing their grief to the bereaved family.

55-year-old Gauri was a staunch critics of Hindutva based politics. Senior journalists assembled in Press Club of India in New Delhi and condemned her assassination. Noted media forums including Editors’ Guild of India, Press Club of India and Human Rights Organizations like AMHAD (Act Now for Harmony And Democracy) also condemned her death. Editors Guild of India in its statement said that her assassination is the murder of democracy and the precedent of crushing disagreement and an attack on freedom of the press. She was a journalist who always fought for getting justice. She was brutally murdered in order to silence her voice.

Congress President, Ms. Sonia, Vice President, Mr. Rahul Gandhi also condemned her death and said that it reminds us that the intolerance and narrow mindedness is depicting in our country. Mr. Rahul Gandhi told that no one can crush the truth. Ms. Sonia Gandhi contacted the CM of Karnataka, Mr. Siddaramaiah and instructed him to take stern action against the culprit. Information Minister, Ms. Smriti Irani while condemning Gauri’s assassination hoped that quick probe would be ordered and justice would be done.

Press Council of India condemned Gauri’s death and hoped that Govt. of Karnataka would give a detailed report in this regard. Taking direct cognizance of it, the council issued a notice directing the Govt. of Karnataka to submit complete report.

Meanwhile, Kerala Union of Working Journalist, New Delhi branch also staged a protest at Jantar Mantar road in New Delhi. It said that the killing of senior Kannada Journalist is the reflection of politics of intolerance. An NGO of New Delhi “ANHAD” claimed that such incidents will not demoralize the struggle for which Gauri Lankesh was identified. The Politburo of CPI (M) told that it is the result of the spread of hatred and intolerance by the RSS. The left party demanded the Govt. of Karnataka to arrest the culprit and take stern action.
