To gauge anti-Modi wave, BCCI calls for special meeting

New Delhi, June 20: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to start the process that will lead to the formal ouster of Lalit Modi, the suspended chairman of the Indian Premier League.

In a letter addressed to affiliated units, the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on July 3.

On the agenda is the reconstitution of the disciplinary committee — formed to hold the inquiry against Lalit Modi. The meeting is also been called to ratify the action of the secretary with regard to the the three showcause notices issued to Modi. Also a discussion will be held about decisions to be taken with regard to the Indian Premier League.

However, the meeting also has an unstated agenda. A top BCCI official said that the SGM has been called to get the idea of where everyone stands with regard to Modi. “We will get to know the number of votes we have. We are not in a hurry to officially sack Modi but we’ll get an idea of the mood among the various units,” the top official said.

While it has been reported that Modi could be sacked with a three-fourths majority in the SGM next month, the top BCCI official said that nothing of that sort will be done till the disciplinary committee submits its report.

The disciplinary committee earlier consisted of President Shashank Manohar, IPL governing council member Arun Jaitley and current IPL interim chairman Chirayu Amin.

However, Manohar opted out. Manohar did so as he didn’t want to stand in the way of a fair trial. Modi in his reply to the showcause notice had demanded BCCI president Manohar and secretary Srinivasan withdraw from the ongoing proceeding against him in order to ensure that things were above board.

“Let Modi be first found to be guilty. There is no point in jumping to a conclusion,” a BCCI official said. At the SGM a replacement will be named in the place of Manohar in the disciplinary committee. However, it is not clear as to who it could be.
