Gas tanker tragedy: Special Cabinet announces compensation

Today’s Special Cabinet Meet, convened to discuss compensation to the victims of the gas tanker tragedy in Kannur, declared several packages under three categories. Briefing on Cabinet decisions here, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said special packages under three categories were mainly for the affected parties, affected area and precautionary measures to be taken for transportation of inflammable material in the event of the tragedy that stole 19 lives. The families of those dead in the tragedy will be given Rs 10 lakh each as solatium, he said. Indian oil Corporation (IOC) will be directed to give job for one person from each of the affected families and also Rs 5000 as pension per month to those who are unable to take up the job. All the treatment expenses of the victims would be taken up by the Government, he said.
