Garbage collection affected as violence continues

Hyderabad, March 31: The sheen of being one of the cleanest and green cities is in danger of getting worn off because of the current communal flare up as the GHMC is not in a position to lift garbage from the troubled spots.

With eight more police stations in addition to the 17 announced on Monday placed under indefinite curfew, there is little chance of the municipal garbage trucks lifting solid waste from any of these localities. Other than hindrance to the vehicular movement, drivers’ attendance too has been hit as several reside in the old city.

“We managed to pick up garbage in relatively calm areas of Goshamahal, Malakpet, Bahadurpura and other areas on Tuesday morning. Some of our staff living in the old city braved the trouble and reported for work. But, we can lift garbage only if some kind of police escort is given,” said Chief Medical Officer of Health Jairam.

Debris on roads

However, on the request of the police authorities two trucks each were allotted to each police station in the riot hit areas for cleaning up stones and other debris lying on the roads and lanes lest these be used for pelting, he said. The vehicles have been allotted from Monday morning onwards.

The city generates close to 4,000 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste each day and thus far, the civic body has been taking pride of lifting most of it and transporting to the dump yard at Jawaharnagar.

And at least half of it is generated from areas of the old city.

Sanitation officials say that even if an hour’s time is given to relax curfew in any of the police stations on Wednesday, they will be in a position to lift the garbage without much ado.
