One person has been arrested for allegedly withdrawing cash illegally from unmanned ATMs by using fake debit cards, police said today.
Sanjay Patel (from Sama locality in the city) was arrested yesterday after complaints from several ATM card
holders, who learnt about debited amounts from their savings banks accounts through withdrawls on different dates,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime), Vadodara, Subhash Trivedi said.
We collected CCTV footages from these ATMs and studied the modus operandi of the gang involving Patel,” he
said.
“On the basis of CCTV footages, Patel was picked up from the Sama locality in the city. He confessed his crime
saying two other members were also involved in it.
One of the two is from Agra in Uttar Pradesh and another from Gujarat,” Trivedi said.
The interrogation of Patel revealed that they (accused) had been withdrawing cash from ATM machines by using
fake debit cards for quite some time, he said.
Patel and his accomplices are also understood to have committed similar offences in Rajkot, the DCP said.
About their modus operandi, Trivedi said, “Through a small PIN pad installed camera, they (accused) used to learn
about the password and mobile numbers of debit card holders withdrawing amounts from these ATMs.”
After writing the data on fake debit cards in their possession, they would withdraw cash from different ATMs,
he explained.
Police are also investigating as to how many times this gang has committed such offences in the past and the
amount withdrawn by them through fake debit ATM cards.
Further investigations in the case were on while attempts were being made to nab the other two accused, he
added.
