Chennai, June 19: Four men posing as police personnel intercepted a car near the Vepery police station here on Wednesday evening and allegedly relieved an occupant in the vehicle of Rs.50 lakh.
According to police sources, Kamalraj (25) of Pulianthope, employee of a steel store in Sowcarpet, was going to the shop from his owner’s house in Kilpauk with the cash in the car.
The accused stopped the car on Narayanasamy Street and started checking the vehicle. They told Kamalraj that they were part of a special team from the office of the Commissioner of Police.
Even as he tried to explain that the money belonged to his employer, the accused in plain clothes took the cash bag and walked towards the Vepery police station, asking him to come there and explain.
When Kamalraj went into the police station after parking the car nearby, the four were not to be found there. Police personnel in the station told him that no vehicle check was carried out in the area.
Enquiries made at the Police Commissioner’s office revealed that no special team had been formed to conduct vehicle checks.
Though special teams combed the area, the accused had managed to escape.
Police suspect that they might have come in a vehicle. Enquiries were being made with the shop owner and other employees.
Information on the movement of the money might have been passed on to the accused by a person known to the shop owner, police said.
Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said investigators were following specific clues. There were some contradictions in the complainant’s statements.
