New Delhi:Delhi Police today arrested eight persons and recovered high-end mobile handsets worth around Rs 2.50 crore and claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of phone snatchers.
The gang was targeting students in and around the Delhi University campus for quite some time and on Saturday, one of the members, identified as Vicky, was spotted by a police team roaming around on his motorbike in the campus area. He was apprehended after a chase, a senior official said.
Vicky led police to Tarun Kumar, Monu and Rikki, all mobile dealers at Karol Bagh market. They acted as receivers of the stolen phones.
Their interrogation led investigators to other gang members, identified as Nitin, Bijendra, Kannu and another youth who is a B. Com graduate.
Police recovered 448 high-end mobile handsets, including 310 i-phones, with an estimated value of around Rs 2.5 crore, from their possession, the official said.
The gang was active in several states and a few of them often frequented Nepal and China to dispose off or procure stolen phones. Monu was also involved with mobile snatching gangs operating in a neighboring country, the official added.
