Hyderabad, June 24: A member of a gang involved in vehicle thefts was arrested on Tuesday and four-wheelers worth Rs 20 lakh were recovered from him. The gang was involved in selling of stolen cars, by creating fake vehicle documents through the used car agents.
Task Force sleuths nabbed D Balakrishna, a resident of Neredmet and native of Kadapa, and seized the fourwheelers from him. In May, police had arrested six members of the gang and recovered more than 39 fourwheelers from them. Task Force DCP V B Kamalasan Reddy said that the gang, which is led by Thakur, a resident of Mumbai, steal four-wheelers from various parts of the country and bring them to the city. They prepare fake registration certificates of the vehicles by forging the signatures of the transport authorities and using the stamps and seals of RTAs of different districts, particularly at Markapuram in Prakasam District. “They put registration numbers of two-wheelers on the stolen four-wheelers and
prepare the registration, clearance and insurance certificates,” the DCP said. They transfer the vehicle in the name of one of the gang members and sell it in the pre-owned cars market. The gang have also cheated several banks by obtaining vehicles loans on the stolen vehicles. Police have appealed to the public to verify the registration and chassis numbers of the second-hand vehicles with the RTA vehicles before purchasing.
