Brazil: Gang held, who planned to make ₹2000 crore robbery

Sao Paulo: A gang of robbers was held by the Brazilian police, who planned to accomplish the biggest bank heist in the history.

They spent four months of time digging a tunnel into the main vault of the national bank containing £240 million (₹2000 crore). Had the robbery been successful, it could have been the ‘biggest bank robbery in history,’ reported Dailymail.

A 550 yard-long tunnel was found in southern Sao Paulo, leading from the robbers’ rented house to a branch of the Bank of Brazil. Police said the tunnel is big enough for an adult to stand up inside it, as per the Brazilian media.

Pictures of the tunnel show wooden planks and iron bars holding tunnel’s roof. Apart from that, the tunnel is equipped with lights to lead the way inside. The investigators had been monitoring the gang for two months and the arrest was made after the tunnel was completed.

“The gang’s investment was in the range of 4 million real (£958,808),” lead investigator of the case Fábio Pinheiro Lopes said according to RT.

“Each of the participants put in 200,000 real (£47,940) and their estimate was to take 1 billion real (£240million). It would be the biggest assault in the world,” he added.
