Gandhi’s statue desecrated, tension in north Nagpur

Nagpur, November 11: A mob protesting the desecration of statue of Mahatma Gandhi today in the city, shouted slogans and tried to block vehicular traffic in north Nagpur area.

According to police, the statue was found damaged in Vinoba Bhave Nagar area of North Nagpur this morning.

Some local resident of the area, who were on morning walk, found that some miscreants had desecrated the statue of the Father of the nation. Soon, a mob gathered there and shouted slogans that the statue be replaced wih a new one, police said.

Talking with UNI, deputy commissioner of police Mr S Darade said people blocked roads for some time. The Maharashtra minister for Employment, Nitin Raut and the city mayor Archana Dehankar visited the spot and tried to pacify the crowd.

No arrests had been made so far and the situation is under control, he added.
