Gallery for art exhibition to come up in Delhi

New Delhi, November 18: Artists fretting about lack of exhibition space in Delhi now have a reason to cheer. The Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts (IGNCA) will establish a “very large” gallery at a prime location in the national capital.

“We are establishing a very large gallery for exhibition, possibly in January. Delhi truly lacks exhibition space for all art forms.

This gallery is going to be a major project,” said Jyotindra Jain, Member Secretary of IGNCA. “We will set up a committee of experts from different fields of art and culture. They will not only scrutinise applications of those who want to set up the exhibitions but will also generate our own projects,” he said on the eve of the IGNCA Foundation Day celebrated on the birth anniversary of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.

The IGNCA also announced exhibition of works by 19th century Indian photographer Raja Deen Dayal in January as the first programme in the gallery. In 2011, IGNCA plans to showcase works of prominent artist Ananda Coomaraswamy.

“We recently acquired his works from his family at a very low price. His correspondence with Sister Nivedita (social worker and disciple of Swami Vivekananda), that we will put up, reveals a lot about the national movement”, Jain said.

“Our idea is to make IGNCA come up as Asia”s biggest treasure house of arts,” Advisor Raghurama Ayyar said. On the occasion of its 24th Foundation Day, IGNCA will stage classical dance performances by exponents like Madhvi Mudgal (Odissi) and Geeta Chandran (Bharatanatyam).

It will also have a Kathak performance by artistes of Kathak Kendra.
