Tripoli, August 24: A leading member of Libya’s Transitional National Council (TNC) says he hopes that Muammar Gaddafi will not resort to using chemical weapons against his own people.
Mahmoud Jibril, a revolutionary leader, was speaking at a news conference in the Qatari capital city of Doha on Tuesday.
Jibril also warned that the war against Gaddafi is not over yet, expressing hope that parts of southern Libya which are still in the hands of pro-Gaddafi forces will be liberated in the coming days.
Gaddafi and his family must stand trial for “crimes they have committed against the Libyan people,” the TNC member added.
The opposition leader said that most of Gaddafi’s officers have surrendered themselves to the revolutionary forces.
Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary William Hague has also warned that Gaddafi’s crumbling regime may unleash stocks of chemical weapons.
“These are still difficult and dangerous times in Libya. There are many weapons out there,” Hague said.
Libyan government has its main stockpile of mustard gas, which can cause terrible blistering and death, as well as other chemicals in a site in southeast of Tripoli and has stored hundreds of tons of raw uranium yellowcake at a small nuclear facility east of the capital, reports say.
