Furnace-like conditions in Odisha, Telangana

New Delhi: Blistering heat baked Odisha today with Titlagarh the hottest place in the state at 47 degrees Celsius while Telangana also continued to reel under heatwave conditions.

Delhiites experienced pleasant weather as scattered rains in several parts of the city led to a significant fall in mercury with the maximum temperature settling at 29.4 degrees, the lowest recorded in May in the last seven years.

The Safdarjung observatory, recording of which is considered the official figure for the city, recorded a maximum temperature which was 11 notches below the season’s average, making it the coolest May day since 2011, said a MeT department official.

Titlagarh at 47 degrees Celsius recorded the highest temperature in Odisha so far this summer. The entire state virtually turned into a boiling pot as the mercury breached the 43-degree mark in at least nine places and 40 degrees mark in 14 places, the MeT office said.

Titlagarh was closely followed by Balangir, which recorded a maximum temperature of 46.5 degrees Celsius, while the mercury stood at 45.2 degrees Celsius at Bhawanipatna, 44.9 degrees Celsius at both Malkangiri and Sonepur, 44.1 degrees Celsius at Angul and 43.9 degrees Celsius at Saambalpur, it said.

Telangana also bore the brunt of heatwave conditions with Ramagundam recording the the highest maximum of 45 degrees Celsius in the state, IMD said.

Ramagundam was followed by Nizamabad at 44 degrees.

Several other towns in the state recorded temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius, IMD Hyderabad said in its report of maximum temperatures.

Several places in Rajasthan recorded rainfall in the last 24 hours, giving much respite to people from the hot weather.

Barmer recorded its hottest with maximum temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius followed by 39.2 in Jaisalmer, 39 each in Kota and Churu, 38.5 in Sriganganagar, 37.4 in Dabok, 36.7 in Pilani, 36.5 in Jaipur, 36.4 in Bikaner and 36 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur, respectively.

Despite light rains and thundershowers at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad was the hottest place in the state at 44.6 degrees Celsius, the MeT office said.

Rainfall was recorded in Bijnore and Moradabad, it said.

Day temperatures were above normal in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad and Moradabad.

Maximum temperatures hovered below normal in most parts of Punjab and Haryana with rains lashing a few places in both the states.

Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 36.8 degrees Celsius, one degree below the normal, a MeT department report said.

Ambala in Haryana recorded a maximum of 35.2 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the normal, while Hisar and Karnal had maximums of 39 and 34.4 degrees Celsius, respectively, four notches below the normal, the report said.

In Punjab, Amritsar’s maximum temperature was 34.1 degrees Celsius, five degrees below the normal.

Ludhiana and Patiala recorded identical temperatures of 36.3 degrees Celsius, three notches below the normal and Ludhiana recorded 0.6 mm of rainfall.
