Hyderabad, October 25: The Lake Protection Committee in Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) area will take up the demarcation of the full tank level (FTLs) of 169 lakes in the GHMC area and 501 lakes in the HMDA area to prevent further encroachments in the water spread area and the buffer zone. An enumeration of the existing encroachments will also be made in order to take further action in this regard.
The committee which met here decided to incorporate the memoirs of the lakes in the revenue records. Lake maps will be drawn with the latitudes and longitudes of the FTL boundaries which will also go into the records.
The committee has requested the minor irrigation department to take up the demarcation of the remaining 501 lakes and prepare an action plan to complete the works within a stipulated period.
As per the irrigation department, as many as 3,086 tanks are present in the HMDA area.
Rajeshwar Tiwari, metropolitan commissioner, HMDA and chairman of the Lake Protection Committee asked the committee members to act immediately for removal of the new encroachments in their respective jurisdictions.
HMDA is coordinating with members of the committee and implementing agencies for the demarcation of lakes, for securing the boundary of the lakes, to protect them from encroachments, for de-silting lakes, and also take measures against misuse of the lake environment.
