Hyderabad, July 28: When MBA student Roopa Devi was offered help in her studies by her senior, she thought it was just a ‘friendly’ gesture.
She never had an inkling about the evil intentions he had. The second year MBA student of Dhruva College of Management at Medchal, 21-year Roopa Devi of Yanam, who was attacked at her hostel by her senior Bhanu, on Sunday night, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Her condition is said to be stable.
Police said Bhanu came to the hostel with a pre-planned motive to harm Roopa Devi, if she turned down his advances.
“Bhanu was a helpful student who would assist his juniors. Roopa Devi too used to approach him whenever she had any doubts in her academics,” Medchal police said quoting the classmates of the injured girl.
Roopa Devi’s classmates claimed that she was never in love with Bhanu but was just friendly with him.
“Bhanu might have thought otherwise and he even proposed to her a couple of times but she never responded positively,” they said.
After Bhanu passed out of college, he reportedly tried to meet Roopa Devi several times.
Meanwhile, Roopa Devi’s family fixed her marriage with another boy and the marriage was scheduled for August 14. After that, Roopa Devi started avoiding Bhanu altogether.
“Bhanu kept calling Roopa Devi asking her to spare him a few minutes since there were serious issue to discuss,” the students said. This was on Sunday morning. Finally, in the evening, Roopa Devi agreed to meet him for a few minutes. She thought that she would tell Bhanu to stay out of her life once and for all.
“Roopa Devi went out of the hostel and spoke to Bhanu for a few minutes. Both of them entered into an argument following which the hostel security asked Bhanu to leave the place and Roopa Devi started to return,” police said quoting eye-witnesses.
It was at this juncture that Bhanu lost his cool. “He jumped over the compound wall and ran after Roopa Devi, who just started climbing the stairs to enter the hostel. He grabbed her hand and attacked her,” an eyewitness told the police.
“Bhanu had concealed two knives, one in each pair of socks, and attacked her with one of them,” police said.
Meanwhile, police on Monday produced Bhanu before a magistrate and remanded him to judicial custody. A case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) was registered against him, Medchal police inspector Mohd Ghousuddin said.
Police said the condition of Roopa Devi remained stable and she would be under observation for the next 48 hours.
Never loved Bhanu, Roopa tells police
Roopa, in her statement to the police, said that she had never been in love with Bhanu.
“We become close friends as he used to help me in my academics as well as other things.
He started threatening me after my marriage was fixed,” Medchal police inspector Mohammad Ghousuddin said. Roopa told police that Bhanu proposed to her a couple of times but that she had bluntly rejected him. Bhanu, however, claimed that they were in love with each other and he could not digest the fact that she was distancing herself after her marriage was fixed.
