Friend held in teenager assault case

Hyderabad, April 20: Police on Monday arrested a 24-year-old car driver for ‘sexually assaulting’ an 18-year-old college student on Sunday.

The youth, identified as Kola Venkatesham alias Venkataiah, a driver in the department of Commercial Tax, was arrested last night and has been booked on charges of rape by Narayanguda police, Additional Commissioner of Police (Coordination) A R Anuradha, who supervised the investigation, told reporters on Monday.

“It was not a gangrape. It was a cruel act of a youth who allegedly raped the 18-year-old college student who was admitted to a government maternity hospital here in a serious condition,” she said.

The accused, who befriended the girl, was arrested on the basis of the mobile call records of the victim, the ACP said.

The girl, who was residing along with her mother at an old-age home in Ram Nagar here, had gone to a place of worship at Narayanaguda yesterday, police said.

Venkatesham picked up the victim from there and took her to his office and raped her in the cellar there. Since she knew him from before the victim did not suspect his intentions, police said.

The accused, however, panicked after the girl started bleeding profusely. He immediately called up her mother saying that her daughter was not well and asked her to go near Shanti theatre. The call was made from Venkatesham’s mobile. “The victim’s mother, a visually challenged woman, went near Shanti theatre and shifted the girl to a nearby private hospital. After reaching the hospital, Venkatesham fled from there leaving the victim and her mother,’’ Anuradha said.

“We found that the victim received four to five calls from Venkatesham since yesterday morning. The girl reportedly asked Venkatesham to meet her near the place of worship,’’ Anuradha said.
