Hyderabad, October 12: Even before the life returned to normalcy in Vijayawada, the officials on Sunday issued a fresh flood warning and asked people living in low-lying areas to evacuate their homes. The residents who returned to their homes after a brief stay at relief camps, were asked to go back to relief camps once again.
According to sources, the Prakasam Barrage has been receiving inflows of four to five lakh cusecs at any given time during the past one week. Due to forecast of heavy rains in Karnataka and Maharashtra in the next 24 hours, the irrigation officials decided to release about six to seven lakh cusecs of water from Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects tonight. Immediately, they alerted the Krishna district administration about the possible increase in water inflows to the Prakasam Barrage which is likely to flood low-lying areas of Vijayawada city.
District Collector Peeyush Kumar convened an emergency meeting and asked the officials to issue first warning at Prakasam Barrage. As a precautionary measure, the dwellers of low-lying areas like Ramalingeswarapuram, Tarakaramapuram, Krishnalanka and Bhavanipuram were asked to vacate their houses and return to the relief camps where they were accommodated for the past one week after the recent floods.
However, the officials said that it was a routine procedure followed during possible flood threats.
The Irrigation officials were also asked to increase the outflows to ensure that there was no threat to the city.
Meanwhile, the flood water at several villages like Jaggaiahpeta, Muktyala and other nearby villages has not yet receded. Flood water overflowed the roads at these villages cutting off the traffic at many places in Krishna district. Several villages in Krishna and Guntur districts are yet to recover from the devastation created by the recent floods. Many victims are still taking shelter at the relief camps as all their properties including house, clothes, furniture, utensils and other goods got washed away in the floods.
