MUMBAI: Francois Gautier, a known Islamophobe and a Hindutva activist has wrote a controversial tweet questioning a maker’s choice to cast Aamir Khan, a Muslim actor playing a lead role in a movie on Hindu epic – the Mahabharata.
As soon as reports of Aamir playing a povital role of ‘Hindu’ character in the Rs 1,000-crore budget movie series based on great Indian epic co-produced by Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, the French-born journalist wrote, “Why should @AamirKhan, a Muslim, play in most ancient & sacred of Hindu epics, the Mahabharata? Is @BJP4India Govt of @narendramodi going to be like the @INCIndia & just stand by in name of secularism??? Would Muslims allow a Hindu to play life of Mohamed (PBUH)?”

Gautier’s remarks did not go down well with veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar.
The noted poet lambasted and called the columnist a scoundrel before asking him, “Which foreign agency is paying you to spread this kind of perverse and poisonous thoughts in our country.”
“You scoundrel, have you not seen Peter Brooks production of this great epic Mahabharata in France. I would like to know which foreign agency is paying you to spread this kind of perverse and poisonous thoughts in our country,” Javed Akhtar tweeted.

Interestingly, in BR Chopra’s TV serial Mahabharata that ran from October 1988 to June 1990 on DD National, the actor who played Arjuna is Feroze Khan, popularly known as Arjun. Its script and dialogues was written Rahi Masoom Raza.
Prominent personalities took to twitter to express their own views:

why should a francois gautier, of christian name and french blood, be dirtying the mahabharata with his intervention? Is @BJP4India Govt of @narendramodi going to be like the @INCIndia & just stand by in name of secularism???? https://t.co/AUWZcfvJQi

Your question is ridiculous @fgautier26 . An actor should be treated as an actor only. Unless we learn to handle religion as personal matter and don’t bring it to public view we will keep fighting on frivolous matter and miss important ones.

Stop dragging the arts and cinema in your fake and disgusting hindutva propoganda. Aamir Khan is an actor par excellence and that is all that is needed to play any religious charachter, be it Lord Krishna or Prophet Muhammad. Cinema has no religion.

@fgautier26 Just go watch this beautiful 'Hindu' composition. https://t.co/QdcG6SV6Y1
The singer #MohammedRafi, composer #Naushad & lyricist #ShakeelBadayuni were all #Muslim. And yet no film song has ever been as Hindu in ethos!!!— Yögésh Leelā Pawār (@powerofyogesh) March 22, 2018
