Freed Yemeni activist vows more anti-government protests

Sana’a, January 26: A Yemeni rights activist vowed on Monday to continue leading anti-government protests following her release from a two-day detention in Sana’a.

Tawakul Karman, a member of the opposition Islah party, was released on Monday after a pledge from her family that ‘she doesn’t break the law and order’ by organizing unlicensed protests, a government official said.

Karman was arrested on Saturday after she led a protest outside Sana’a University.

‘We will continue our struggle until the regime leaves. We will defend order and law and the constitution in our country,’ Karman told reporters after her release.

‘The jasmine revolution will continue until the regime goes,’ she said.

Karman’s arrest triggered protests in the capital Sana’a and the southern city of Taiz on Monday.

In Sana’a, hundreds of women gathered outside the office of the attorney general to call for her release.
