Four tankers, car gutted in Sharjah

Dubai, March 25: Four trucks and a car were gutted in a massive fire which happened at the Industrial Area 12 in Sharjah, at around 4.30pm on Thursday.

One of the large diesel tankers belonging to Al Bahrain Transportation Company caught fire and it soon spread to the company’s office gutting it entirely.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Lt Col Khalid Obaid bin Kanoon, head of the fire stations of Sharjah Civil Defence department said no casualties have been reported. Lt Col Kanoon explained that a diesel tanker with capacity to hold 8,000 gallons caught fire first. It then spread to another tanker with a capacity of 10,000 gallons. The flames soon spread to two more tankers and a car belonging to the company, gutting them completely. The loss has been estimated at over Dh1 million.

Civil Defense fire fighters and the police worked for hours to put out the fire . However, due to inflammatory material in the trucks, thick smoke engulfed the skies of Sharjah causing panic among residents.

The Civil Defence Department has started investigations to find out the cause of the fire. Inspections will be conducted in the company after cooling operations have been carried out to find out if it obliged with the fire safety regulations.

Lt Col Kanoon said fire fighters from the Samnan, Mualaih, Al Mina, as well as Dubai helped out with the fire extinguishing operations which took only one hour. Cooling operation had started to ensure that fire would not break out again
